Altus Public Schools Names Danny Nix Head Boys Basketball Coach

ALTUS, Okla. Altus Public Schools is proud to announce the hiring of Danny Nix as the new Head Boys Basketball Coach at Altus High School.

Coach Nix brings more than four decades of coaching, athletic administration, and educational leadership to the Bulldog basketball program. Throughout his distinguished career, he has built a reputation for developing successful teams, mentoring student-athletes, and creating championship cultures.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Nix to the Bulldog family,” said Altus Athletic Director Dusty Davis. “His experience, leadership, and passion for developing young people make him an outstanding fit for our students and our community. We look forward to the future of our boys basketball program under his leadership.”

Coach Nix spent 43 years at Burkburnett High School in Texas, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, athletic director for 26 years, and head boys basketball coach for 40 seasons. During his coaching career, he compiled an impressive 866-406 varsity record, won 19 district championships, and led his teams to 49 playoff victories. His teams advanced to 11 regional semifinal or regional tournament appearances, including Class 4A State Runner-Up finishes in 2008 and 2011.

His accomplishments have earned him statewide and national recognition. Coach Nix served as President of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, was named the 2011 National Federation of State High School Associations Texas Coach of the Year, was selected among the UIL’s Top 100 Coaches of the First 100 Years, and ranks among the winningest high school basketball coaches in the nation. In recognition of his lasting impact, Burkburnett High School named its gymnasium in his honor in 2020. He has also been inducted into both the North Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Burkburnett ISD Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025.
